What to do when a water damage claim is denied

Start with the written explanation, your policy and a clear record of the damage.

Get the reasons in writing.

Ask your insurer to explain the denial and identify the policy provisions it relies on. Keep that explanation with your claim records.

Organize the documentation.

Gather the policy, damage photographs, estimates, correspondence and a dated record of conversations. Identify any information that may be missing or incorrect.

Ask about review options.

Discuss the insurer’s review process and any applicable deadlines. California’s Department of Insurance offers consumer guidance and a complaint process. Seek qualified advice about your individual claim when needed.

Keep the construction scope clear.

ARC can help document proposed repairs and their costs. A construction estimate supports the repair discussion; it does not determine insurance coverage.
